Dinner typically takes up 60-90 minutes of your reception, making it one of the longest segments of your celebration. Yet many couples skip over the details when planning their timeline with their DJ. Here are the 4 dinner questions your DJ better be asking you to ensure dinner runs smoothly.
4 Dinner Questions Your DJ Better Be Asking You
Is your dinner plated or buffet style?
If you're having a buffet, tables need to be dismissed in an organized way. Does your DJ need to handle this, or will your venue coordinator or catering staff take the lead?
Whoever manages it, your DJ should announce the process clearly so guests know what to expect and when they can head to the buffet line.
What's the table dismissal order?
Most couples start with the head table, followed by parents and immediate family, then work through the remaining tables. But we've worked with plenty of couples who haven't thought about this yet—and that's okay.
You don't need an elaborate system. Even if your answer is "we don't care, just get people fed," that helps your DJ create a smooth flow.
What music should play during dinner?
Music is a big reason you hired a DJ in the first place. What atmosphere do you want during the meal?
Some couples prefer a specific style—jazz, acoustic covers, soft pop. Others have particular song requests. And some trust their DJ to set the right tone. Whatever your preference, share it so your DJ can deliver.
Who's giving speeches, and when?
Speeches are a major part of most receptions. We recommend starting them toward the end of dinner, while everyone's still seated and before the bar reopens. But the timing is flexible based on your preferences.
What we do need: who's speaking, their names, and how you'd like them introduced. We'll include all of this in your DJ timeline.
